Woking 1 Wrexham 1

Despite an improved performance Wrexham failed to win for the 8th time in a row as struggling Woking pegged them back to a draw. Reaching the play-offs now looks a very tall order for the Dragons.

Dean Saunders handed a debut to former Blackburn and England Under-21 international Matt Jansen, who despite having not played a competitive game for 3 years, showed up well in place of Mike Proctor. Nathan Fairhurst and Wes Baynes were also handed recall.
The game got off to a flying start with genuine chances for either side at both ends, Andy Fleming coming closest with a shot just a whisker over the bar.
On 10 minutes, the Dragons took the lead. A foul on Jansen gave Baynes the opportunity to try his luck from range with a free-kick. Via the help of a deflection it found the back of the net to put Wrexham in control.

The advantage should have been doubled after the half-hour mark when Baynes was clearly fouled in the penalty area. No spot-kick was given as the referee seemed oblivious to the incident much to the disbelief of the travelling Wrexham fans.
In keeping with the general standard of the BSP the general officiating was poor, and certainly didn’t favour Wrexham. However, the Dragons did have enough possession and enough chances to make this irrelevant before half-time, but had to settle for the slender lead.

Desperate for points themselves, the home side hit back early in the second-half with a goal from Rob Elvins. Left by his marker to receive the ball in space with only Anthony Williams to beat, he made no mistake with the finish for the equaliser.
Wrexham were still the better side but couldn’t convert the chances that came their way, as Jansen gave way to Silvio Spann. With around 20 minutes to go, Elvins should have given Woking the lead, lifting over an unguarded net after Wilfried Domoraud drew a full-stretch save from Williams.
With the clock running down, Obi Anoruo replaced Ryan Flynn and the youngster didn’t waste any time getting into the action. Enthusiastic, he wasn’t afraid to shoot or close down goalkeeper Danny Knowles.

Unfortunately the Dragons just couldn’t muster the goal that would have handed them all 3 points. Michael Proctor replaced Louis for last few futile minutes but Woking had done just enough for appoint.

This was an improvement on recent outings yet at this stage of the season it’s the points that matter and many will see this as another two dropped by Wrexham.
It’s difficult to see them breaking back into the play-off pack on current form, let alone going on to win them, yet a win away at Northwich could go some way to changing that.
