Lewes 0 Wrexham 3

Wrexham finally moved into the play-off places and kept their first clean sheet away from home this season at struggling Lewes. The long-trip to the Dripping Pan was one of the few BSP unaffected by the recent weather.

There were no surprises in the starting line-up with Ashley Westwood, Marc Williams and Jefferson Louis all returning to the side. Following the withdrawal of his transfer request in midweek, Wes Baynes was back in the squad.

In the opening minutes Ryan Flynn sneaked in at the far post to meet a Jon Brown cross but his header was a poor one and a good chance went to waste. Generally there was little for the Wrexham fans who had made the long-trip to the South Coast to cheer about, though Wrexham were comfortable.
The home side offered no real threat other than through Kieran St Aimie who was kept relatively quiet in contrast to his previous appearances against the Dragons. Real opportunities were few and far between for both sides in a game that was lacking in quality.

It was a similar story early on in the second-half, the game just begging for Wrexham’s superior fitness and class to show. A well-worked move saw a Louis header cleared off the line and from the breakaway Lewes went straight down the other end. From the resulting cross St Aimie should have done better from 6-yards out.
With just over 20 minutes to go Wrexham finally made the breakthrough. A Jon Brown corner was met well by the head of Marc Williams who powered home to make it 1-0 and lift some of the pressure that was starting to build as the clock ticked on.

Lewes were nearly level moments later however when some risky dawdling on the ball by goalkeeper Gavin Ward almost saw Rooks striker Anthony Charles steal the ball from his feet. With 10 minutes to go, Wes Baynes replaced Jon Brown and within minutes had earned redemption following his foolish, and since withdrawn, transfer request last month. Picking the ball up he ran at the Lewes defence, cut inside and unleashed one of his trademark screamers from outside the box for 2-0.

Wrexham’s job was complete, the game drew to a scrappy close and what could have been an uncomfortable afternoon had been averted. The performance wasn’t pretty but the results are more important at this stage. Just one defeat in 15 BSP games under Dean Saunders speaks volumes. The Dragons are in the play-off places at long last.

Now they need to push on to ensure that we are not still playing at ‘basic’ grounds like the Dripping Pan in front of crowds of only 600 or so next season…
